Well it's bout day. Not for me but for the fabulous ladies of PBDC. I am going to help out with the bout and will have front row seats to the action while I run the penalty box.

Wish both teams good luck!!

I am going to keep this short and sweet as I still have lots to do before I head in for the bout. (Renos have also resumed today so I need to stay out of the way of that action lol)

Have a fabulous derby filled weekend I know I am going to :) (Scrimmage tomorrow :D )

Lovin' the Kettlebells!!!

Yeah for Kettlebell Boot Camp!
Now I might sound crazy but I am lovin' the kettle bells! I am not as crazy about the rest of the stuff that we do during the class, like burpies and inch worm push ups but the bells are awesome.

It is such a different work out that anything else that I have been doing to this point. That could be why I am liking it so much.

But on another note...we are down to only a few practices before our debut bout. Everyone is getting quite excited and nervous. Today we will be working on more endurance, pack work and jamming drills in a effort to get ready for the big day.

Plow Stops!!

Yeah for plow stops!

Ankle is slowly getting back to normal. I was able to attend my Spin and Core class yesterday and I was able to do plow stops with out any pain at practice last night!

So I am happy about my ankle but I just found out that my youngest son scored his first lacrosse goal last night and not only did I miss seeing it but I had to find our about it via the internet and the news story on our local paper's site. I can't believe he didn't even tell me about it...

His sister made sure to tell me that he got a penalty, but not one mention of his goal...I don't know about you guys but when I was a kid and I scored for my team it was a big thing to talk about it with the family afterward.

Anyways I am going to carry on with the frustrating day I am having at work and hope that I will get to see my son score another goal at his game tonight.

Happy Hump Day!!

Happy Hump Day!

I hope you all are more motivated than I am today. I have hit that mid week hump hard this week. I have so much on the go and no idea where to start in order to get it all done. I have conflicts between the kids and their lacrosse games/practices and derby. Then there's just work and life in general.

Once again I am going to be thanking by boyfriend for handling the kids lacrosse stuff tonight so that I am free to go and coach derby practice. I am hoping he knows at this point how much I appreciate everything that he does for me for the sake of derby.

I am hoping that he is looking forward to reffing his first scrimmage this weekend. He will be breaking his cherry so to speak lol. And I will be playing so let's see if he calls me on anything :p

But I am plugging away at it all and I am sure that tomorrow will be better but in the mean time in need to get some good tunes playing on the mp3 so that I can get some bounce back in my step before practice tonight.

Draggin my a$$!

I love long weekends, but wow it's tough to get back into a routine when they are over.

I am going to be completely honest. I did not adhere to the plan at all this weekend. Now that is not to say that I ate alot of bad things. I just did not stick to my routine of eating every three hours and I did not have any shakes or vitamins this weekend either. With everything else that was going on the plan kinda went to the wayside.

Well I am back on track this morning and need to stay there if I plan to get any kind of results.

I am glad I felt strong enough to put my skates on last night but my ankle is still tender and not 100% yet so I didn't attempt anything other than skating laps and some very weak t-stops. No plows stops yet for this girl, maybe next practice.

I am really hoping that I am back to 100% before the weekend as I have the opportunity to skate in a scrimmage again this weekend. But with a game coming up in a couple weeks I will only play this scrimmage if my ankle feels strong again.

I hope everyone had a happy zombie jesus day.

Food for today:

6:15 - HerbaLife shake with 3 tsp. PP and 1 scoop PDM, multivitamin, cell activator, total control, flora-fiber
8:00 - green tea
9:00 - an apple and an HerbaLife protein bar
12:10 -HerbaLife shake with 3 tsp. PP and 1 scoop PDM, multivitamin, cell activator, total control, flora-fiber

Injuries Suck!!

So I know first hand that is really sucks to watch someone else get or be hurt. But it also sucks to sustain injuries yourself.
Last night I managed to mess up my own ankle. It's swollen and sore but otherwise fine. A few days off skates and I should be good as new. But at the time it really hurt and at first I was worried that I had seriously injured it like I did back in high school.

So the red arrow in the picture above is pointing to the tendon of the peroneous longus muscle. In high school I completely torn that tendon and several others completely off the bone. So last night when I felt the pop in my ankle I was very worried that I had done the same thing over again.

So as I sit here trying to avoid being on my feet, keeping my leg elevated as much as I can as well as stretching my ankle so it doesn't stiffen up too much I think to myself...jeez this is a really bad time to hurt myself. We have a game coming up in a few weeks and we already have a short roster due to injury and unavailability, taking myself off the roster due to injury would not help the cause.

Well in the mean time I will stick to my nutrition plan and rest up this ankle so that hopefully I can be back on skates next week.

Food for today:

6:15 - HerbaLife shake with 3 tsp. PP and 1 scoop PDM, multivitamin, cell activator, total control, flora-fiber
8:00 - green tea from Timmies

3:00 - an apple and an HerbaLife protein bar

Fresh Meat!!

It's Fresh Meat Day in Moose Jaw!!

Intake nights are so much fun. I can't wait to meet all the smiling, eager and nervous people that are going to be out tonight.

We all love derby so much that intake nights are so awesome cause it gives us a chance to spread the word and get new people addicted to the sport that we love some much.

For most of us derby has changed our lives in very drastic ways. In my case I was a single mother struggling to make ends meet and find any sort of meaning in my life. I found roller derby and have since created what I consider my legacy - the Lil Chicago Roller Derby League. And if anyone who have told me that we would be bout ready in less than a year I would have called them liars, but we are set to play our first bout in less than a month. Everyone is so excited and cannot wait for game day. But in the mean time we need to welcome some new members so the soon we could possibly have 2 home teams and maybe some intraleague bouting :)

Look out Moose Jaw, hope you're ready for us.

Back to the Grind!

Well after an amazing derby weekend I am finally back to the grind.

I came home to my youngest still not feeling well and in turn I did not feel like myself. Well after spending the majority of yesterday in bed sleeping I am feeling near normal so back to the grind for me. Unfortunately I missed my Spin & Core class yesterday morning and now I have to find time in my chaotic schedule to make it up.

I don't even know where to begin to tell you about all of the amazing derby I witnessed and participated in this past weekend in Saskatoon at the first ever Saskatchewan Cup.

I got to play in an invitational scrimmage with some amazing skaters and I got to watch 4 other teams play 2 more amazing bouts. I learned a lot and I hope the others ladies from my league that skated on Sat. did too.

Nothing but a Blur!

Okay this weekend has been so awesome, nothing but a blur.

I got to play in an awesome rookie invitational scrimmage with a lot of other fantastic skaters.

Between travel and playing and watching 4 other awesome teams play some fantastic derby it was very tough to keep to any kind of routine.

I am still recovering from everything...blog will get back to normal tomorrow...I hope...

Ouch!!!

Kettlebells....what was I thinking???
I have no idea what I was thinking when I signed up for this class. I got there this morning and everyone else in the class looked fit enough to run a marathon. Needless to say I don't quite look like that...

I seriously contemplated skipping today's class due to the fact that I am playing in a scrimmage tomorrow and did not want to be too stiff or sore for the game. However I decided against skipping just because I couldn't justify skipping a class that I paid to be in. So away I went...and wow am I sore. The class was less than 2 hours ago and my legs already feel like I walk up a million stairs. On the plus side I did not have to sideline myself halfway through due to lightheadedness.

But either way I am glad I went and I am very proud of my friend and myself for making it through the entire class. Only 5 more weeks to go....

Exhaustion!!!

Sleep...something I have not gotten much of this week.

Between starting my spin and kettle bell classes, the kids lacrosse practices, roller derby practices and roller derby meetings I have been running around like a chicken with my head cut off. I again have to say "thank you" to my boyfriend. He left work yesterday to pick my kids up from their practice so that I could continue coaching last night for roller derby.

I left my house at 5:30 yesterday morning and I never got home until 10:30 last night. This is not a good way to look after myself in the days leading up to a game. I have a huge to do list but I think the thing on the top of the list is an early bedtime as I have another class tomorrow morning at 6am.

Here's hoping that I can make it through the 3 hour meeting I am scheduled to attend today at work. Might have to have a Lift Off or 2 in my pocket so that I can make it through.

Feel free to text me to help keep me awake today lol

Pre Bout Jitters!

The pre bout jitters are starting to set in.

I am excited to be playing in my first rookie scrimmage but at the same time I am disappointed. My boyfriend had planned to come and watch but now he is unfortunately not able to come due to work. Trying to keep my nerves under control but it is proving to be a bit of a challenge. I am hoping that as the days creep by I will not be as nervous.

But I have tons to do at work today so this is short and sweet :)

Chaos!!!

Good Morning!!!

Ok for those of you who do not know. I have kids. I try to keep my kids as active as possible, which is a challenge at the best of times but now that I am coaching a roller derby league it is even more of a challenge.

(#15 is my son)

The box lacrosse season officially kicked off yesterday with our first set of practices. Now as much as I would like to I can not be in 2 places at once so I have to say is a huge "Thank You" to my boyfriend. He has no idea how much I appreciate everything that he does to help with the kids. I have no idea how I would keep it all straight without him. Now I am sure that I am going to have to say this many times over the next few months as the kids practice the same days that we have roller derby practice, and a lot of days they practice at the same time or over lap our practice time as well.

I wish you all could see how jam packed my calendar is with practices. And we don't even have our game schedule yet....this should be an interesting balancing act this season. Hope I don't have to miss too many games. Last year I had to miss a few due to the kids playing in different cities on the same day. Here's hoping I don't have to miss any due to derby commitments.

Anyways here's my food for today. Planning is key when it comes to trying to lose weight. I stuck to yesterdays plan, though I did end up having some Southwest Potato Skins with my protein bar after practice last night...

Food for today:

6:15 - HerbaLife shake with 3 tsp. PP and 1 scoop PDM, multivitamin, cell activator, total control, flora-fiber
8:00 - green tea from Timmies
9:00 - an apple and an HerbaLife protein bar
12:10 - HerbaLife shake with PP and PDM, multivitamin, cell activator, total control, flora-fiber
1:00 - 30oz water with  2 scoops HerbaLife Beverage mix, 1 tsp. HerbaLife Brazilian Herbal Tea and 1 tsp. HerbaLife Herbal Tea Concentrate
3:00 - an apple and an HerbaLife protein bar
6:30 - Spinach salad, raspberry vinaigrette dressing, chicken breast, cheese, multivitamin, flora-fiber

Spring Challenge Workout!

The workout for this challenge will consist of 2 things:

PLYOS
Mo "Quadilla L.K." Sanders has put together a kick ass off skates plyometric workout to help you get the explosive power and strength you need to fly around the track! He has created a series of videos that detail each of the exercises. For the challenge you will be doing 30 minutes of plyos 2 x per week (be sure to give yourself 48-72 hours in between the 2 sessions).

LSD
No, not the trippin kind! Long steady distance to increase endurance. This week it was 3 sets of 2 minutes of steady skating at a fast pace. The duration will increase weekly! (Not a skater? This can be done on a treadmill, elliptical, bike, stair climber, or even...gasp...outside!!!)

Getting back in the Game!!

Ok the last couple days have been pretty rough. But I have come across some words of wisdom that I want to share with everyone.

I have heard from many sources that Bill Walsh was a coaching and leadership genius and here are his tips on how to get back in the game:

Bill Walsh's Five Do's for getting back in the game:
1. Do expect defeat. It's a given when the stakes are high and the competition is working ferociously to beat you. If you're surprised when it happens, you're dreaming; dreamers don't last long.
2. Do expect yourself to stop looking backward and dwelling on the professional "train wreck" you have just been in. It's mental quicksand.
3. Do allow yourself appropriate recovery - grieving - time. You've been knocked senseless; give yourself a little time to recuperate. A keyword here is "little". Don't let it drag on.
4. Do tell yourself, "I am going to stand and fight again," with the knowledge that often when things are at their worst you're closer than you can imagine to success. Our Super Bowl victory arrived less than sixteen months after my "train wreck" in Miami.
5. Do begin planning for you next serious encounter.  The smallest steps - plans - move you forward on the road to recovery. Focus on the fix.

Bill Walsh's Five Don'ts:
1. Don't ask, "Why me?"
2. Don't expect sympathy.
3. Don't bellyache.
4. Don't keep accepting condolances.
5. Don't blame others.

Food for today:
6:30 - HerbaLife shake with 3 tsp. PP and 1 scoop PDM, multivitamin, cell activator, total control, florafiber

Curve Ball!!

Last night a huge curve ball was thrown into my coaching world.

One of my skaters got seriously hurt at practice. Now I have never coached a team before roller derby and I am not exactly sure how to handle this situation. So I am a bit of an emotional mess right now, which is a bit of a problem for my wellness plan as I am an emotional eater. I have done well so far and resisted visiting the vending machine, hopefully my will power holds.

Needless to say I am not having a very productive day at work. Last night after she got hurt I went to the hospital with her, rode in the ambulance and everything. We hung out waited, got x-rayed and finally diagnosed. Then they had to refer her to an orthopedic surgeon in another city. So the plan from there was to cast her and send her home for the night and then see the surgeon this morning. Due to other emergencies coming in the nurses were not able to assist with the cast/splint process so her mom and I stepped up and helped out so that she could get the heck out of there. I kept a brave face, but it was very hard to have to cause her pain in order to cast her leg. I hope she can forgive me eventually.

She is currently hanging out waiting for surgery. They have to put a plate and some screws into her leg to hold everything together so that it can heal properly. I am so very torn and wish that I could be there with her offering my support even though I know she has her family with her doing that exact same thing.

Now I realize that injuries can happen at any time to anyone and we cannot live in fear of them. But I have still been affected by this. I hope she doesn't mind being immortalized in my blog but I felt the need to ramble about this and just "talk" it through...
