Derby Days!

Ouch! I am hurtin' today. Guess that means it was a good practice LOL. And except for the sticky floor we were on last night that caused my legs to cramp it was a good practice.

Now I am hoping that I am not too sore tomorrow as I have a weekend full of derby coming up. I will be playing 3 games in 3 days and I can't wait! It is going to be an awesome learning experience to play with some fantastic veteran skater from some of the local leagues.

So if you have no plans for the weekend and happen to be in Regina SK. Then you need to come on out to the Callie Club and check out some awesome derby action!

Hope you are all having a fantastic derby filled week!

Winds of Change!

Well the winds of change are blowing very strongly today. I have made the decision to change jobs. I am hoping that this is a change for the better. Today I go and give my notice to my boss and submit my signed letter of offer for my new position. I don't think I have ever been so nervous in my whole life.
On another note, practice last night was no where near as hard on my body as I thought it would be and I am looking forward to tonight practice. I am sure that my body will not be as happy with me come this time tomorrow though lol.

I hope everyone is having a fantastic, derby filled week!

Slacker!!

Oh my goodness it has been a long time since my last post. I have been a horrible slacker the last couple of months!

Well I need to get my ass in gear and get back into routine. We have a game in a month and I need to get my shit together. I have not been eating as well as I should have been. I haven't had my skates on in a couple of weeks due to issues with my legs cramping, and having a nasty sinus cold/infection. I haven't even been to the gym.

So starting today I am back on my meal plan and back on my skates...need to find my motivation to get moving again. I suppose the number on the scale should be motivation enough considering I have gained some weigh back since I got lazy. So now it's time to get my ass in gear and get that weight back off and keep losing.

Back to It!

Ok so I have been neglecting my blog for a little while. But I am back again!
There has been alot going on in the last little while.
  • We hosted our first home game
    • we lost :(
  • We had a recuitment night
    • Yay for new freshies!
  • I bought a new car
    • Yay me! lol
  • Our new recruits attended their first practice
    • Yay freshies!
  • I have joined an apprenticeship trainer program with PBDC
    • Yay for learning!
  • I jam timed my first game for the Redneck Betties
    • Yay for derby bouts!
I am very excited for all the new people we have joining our league. Such a varying degree of skills and passion levels. There are a few that you can already tell they are hooked and a few more that look like they are having fun so far but aren't quite convinced that derby is for them. Well I think if they are still coming out to practice then they are hooked, they just don't know it yet :)

Practice number 2 with the freshies tonight and then class number of the apprentice program tomorrow. So great to be learning a new way of teaching the freshies!

Right now I am wishing that I had been able to attend Roller Con this year. Some of our skaters have already made the trek down there so they could get some shopping in before everything gets rolling. I plan to save my pennies so that I can go next year for sure!

All Wrapped Up!

Well game day has come and gone. It's time for life to get back to some sort of normal.

Before that though, I do have to send a huge thank you out to everyone that helped us pull this event off. The game went off without a hitch and yes there were a few issues with the after party in the end it all worked out. So thank you to the league and all of the spouses and family members that made this event a very memorable success!

I'm really wishing that I wasn't stuck at work. I feel that there is so much planning and bout things that I could be working on if I was at home. But that is what I will be doing all day Friday, running around and making sure that everything is in place for the big event :)

Hope to see you all there, if you don't have tickets yet it's not too late! Send me an email and I can hook you up!

Back to Work!!

Well it's back to work, both my actual job and with derby.

In case you did not notice I took the weekend off. I did not blog, I didn't do any bout planning and I didn't do anything more strenuous than read a book all weekend.

It was a much needed recharge of my batteries. I felt that I was on the verge or burning out due to everything that had been going on lately.

Now that the kids lacrosse season has wrapped up for the year I can focus completely on the bout that we have coming up this weekend. But I so needed this weekend off so that I would have the energy to get through this endless week of planning and preparing.

So if you don't have tickets yet I'm not sure what you're waiting for but you better get them soon or you are going to miss out!

Eating Right at Night!

Ok so I was reading my health coach's latest blog post this morning and it really hit home considering what I ate during our meeting last night so I stole the article so I could share it with all of you wonderful people :)

Eating Right at Night

By Luigi Gratton, M.D., M.P.H.

Eating a balanced diet means that you’re taking in a variety of healthy foods at reasonable intervals throughout the day – it doesn’t mean that you “balance” healthy foods eaten during the day with junk foods like pizza and ice cream at night.

But for many people, when the sun goes down, so does their willpower. While they can maintain their sensible eating habits during the day, evening often signals the start of an unending food fest until bedtime.

Strange as it may seem, one of the best solutions to controlling your appetite after dark is to eat more often during the daylight hours. Heavy evening snackers often lack a regular eating pattern – one that includes sensible meals combined with healthy and nutritious snacks.

Putting the Myth to Rest
You’ve probably been told that eating late at night is detrimental. But while your calorie needs are lowest during the night, there is no conclusive scientific evidence that the calories ingested at night are stored more efficiently than those eaten at other times.

Eating foods later in the day rather than earlier is not what leads to weight gain – what matters is your daily caloric intake as a whole. No matter when you eat, if you take in more than you need, your body stores any extra calories as fat. Curbing evening snacking habits leads to weight loss simply because fewer calories are being taken in over the course of the day.

Feeding Frenzy
We do tend to eat most of calories late in the day – Americans eat more calories during dinner than at any other meal. And if you tack on the calories eaten after dinner, it really adds up.

There are several reasons these unhealthy patterns are so commonplace. Some people don’t eat enough during the day which can cause blood sugar levels to drop. This can make people overly hungry and result in overconsumption at night.
Many people are too busy to plan meals – they may dash out the door in the morning with little more than a cup of coffee, and then try to power through the day without taking time to eat properly. It’s no wonder that by the time they get home at night, they’re literally out of gas.

Others are simply eating as an emotional escape from stress or to beat boredom. We tend to mindlessly reach for junk food during sedentary activities such as watching television or using the computer – and we then associate these high calorie foods with relaxation and keep the habit going.

Meal Planning and Suitable Snacks
Putting in the right fuel – and at the regular intervals during the day – is one of the best defenses against nighttime nibbling. Breakfast and lunch meals should provide plenty of protein to keep your mind sharp and hunger at bay as well as some healthy carbs like fruits, veggies and whole grains to maintain blood sugar. A protein shake with fruit is a great way to start the day – otherwise, try an egg white omelet with fruit, a dish of plain nonfat yogurt with fruit, or a quick bowl of oatmeal with some protein powder stirred in.

A protein shake also makes a quick and satisfying lunch, especially when you’re too busy to stop and prepare a meal. Other good choices? Try a salad with some grilled chicken or fish, or a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread with some fruit for dessert.

When energy starts to slide in the afternoon, one tactic that works is to have a substantial snack – almost a “second lunch” – between lunch and dinner. A protein shake or bar, a half sandwich, some soy nuts, or a dish of cottage cheese and fruit are all appropriate choices.

By putting more nutritional emphasis on your daytime meals and snacks, it’s likely you won’t be nearly as hungry at night, so your dinner meal can be lighter and smaller.
The next time you feel like “midnight munching,” think about the benefits of a healthy, protein-powered snack earlier in the day. The nutritional difference will be like night and day.

Dr. Gratton also serves as vice-president of medical affairs at Herbalife.
