Eating Right at Night!

Ok so I was reading my health coach's latest blog post this morning and it really hit home considering what I ate during our meeting last night so I stole the article so I could share it with all of you wonderful people :)

Eating Right at Night

Eating a balanced diet means that you’re taking in a variety of healthy foods at reasonable intervals throughout the day – it doesn’t mean that you “balance” healthy foods eaten during the day with junk foods like pizza and ice cream at night.

But for many people, when the sun goes down, so does their willpower. While they can maintain their sensible eating habits during the day, evening often signals the start of an unending food fest until bedtime.

Strange as it may seem, one of the best solutions to controlling your appetite after dark is to eat more often during the daylight hours. Heavy evening snackers often lack a regular eating pattern – one that includes sensible meals combined with healthy and nutritious snacks.

Putting the Myth to Rest
You’ve probably been told that eating late at night is detrimental. But while your calorie needs are lowest during the night, there is no conclusive scientific evidence that the calories ingested at night are stored more efficiently than those eaten at other times.


Eating foods later in the day rather than earlier is not what leads to weight gain – what matters is your daily caloric intake as a whole. No matter when you eat, if you take in more than you need, your body stores any extra calories as fat. Curbing evening snacking habits leads to weight loss simply because fewer calories are being taken in over the course of the day.

Feeding Frenzy
We do tend to eat most of calories late in the day – Americans eat more calories during dinner than at any other meal. And if you tack on the calories eaten after dinner, it really adds up.


There are several reasons these unhealthy patterns are so commonplace. Some people don’t eat enough during the day which can cause blood sugar levels to drop. This can make people overly hungry and result in overconsumption at night.
Many people are too busy to plan meals – they may dash out the door in the morning with little more than a cup of coffee, and then try to power through the day without taking time to eat properly. It’s no wonder that by the time they get home at night, they’re literally out of gas.

Others are simply eating as an emotional escape from stress or to beat boredom. We tend to mindlessly reach for junk food during sedentary activities such as watching television or using the computer – and we then associate these high calorie foods with relaxation and keep the habit going.

Meal Planning and Suitable Snacks
Putting in the right fuel – and at the regular intervals during the day – is one of the best defenses against nighttime nibbling. Breakfast and lunch meals should provide plenty of protein to keep your mind sharp and hunger at bay as well as some healthy carbs like fruits, veggies and whole grains to maintain blood sugar. A protein shake with fruit is a great way to start the day – otherwise, try an egg white omelet with fruit, a dish of plain nonfat yogurt with fruit, or a quick bowl of oatmeal with some protein powder stirred in.


A protein shake also makes a quick and satisfying lunch, especially when you’re too busy to stop and prepare a meal. Other good choices? Try a salad with some grilled chicken or fish, or a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread with some fruit for dessert.

When energy starts to slide in the afternoon, one tactic that works is to have a substantial snack – almost a “second lunch” – between lunch and dinner. A protein shake or bar, a half sandwich, some soy nuts, or a dish of cottage cheese and fruit are all appropriate choices.

By putting more nutritional emphasis on your daytime meals and snacks, it’s likely you won’t be nearly as hungry at night, so your dinner meal can be lighter and smaller.
The next time you feel like “midnight munching,” think about the benefits of a healthy, protein-powered snack earlier in the day. The nutritional difference will be like night and day.

Lack of Sleep!!

Well it is becoming apparent that the lack of sleep I have been getting is catching up with me. I woke up this morning to my alarm going off an hour after I was supposed to already be awake. Now on the plus side I was not late for work however I did miss my Spin & Core class as a result :(
 

 

I am looking forward to this weekend so that I can take the time to relax and recharge before the madness that next week will bring.

The Calm before the Storm!

Well I am totally wiped out after a crazy busy weekend of lacrosse. I was so busy I even forgot to write down what I had to eat all weekend. I did do a pretty go job of keeping things healthy though. I did have nachos and cheese one evening but lots of chicken and turkey otherwise.
I am now in full on derby planning mode. We are hosting a game here in less than 2 weeks and the details are slowly coming together. All is quiet and calm now but as the big day approaches I know that our stress levels will start to increase. So basically this is the calm before the storm but by next week I am sure I will feel like a chicken with my head cut off...


 
As well as all this the new DerbaLife challenge (Summer Sprint) starts today. They have changed things up this time and turned it into a points based challenge. You earn points in a variety of ways, including posting notes about the workouts and pics of your meals. Should be interesting...lets see if I can get any closer to my goals.

Craziness Continues!

Alright well it's time for yet another busy weekend to get underway.
My daughter has her provincial lacrosse tournament this weekend. The lovely ladies of PBDC have a game and a scrimmage going on and our league is starting to get our venue ready for game day. And then on Monday I have a photo shoot, practice and a meeting.
 
Now as much as I would like to be at all of these events unfortunately it's just not physically possible for that to happen. So derby is taking a bit of a back seat this weekend so that I can attend my daughter's tournament. So depending on how well they play and if they win or lose will depend on how much derby I see or participate in this weekend.
 
So here's hoping they do well but that I can still play in the scrimmage too and that I can find someone to give me a make over on Monday before my photo shoot :)

Fit Test Day!

Well today was fit test day. And well I did not do as well as I had hoped on the push ups and plank portion I did impress myself with my run. I managed to trim 47 seconds off my time. Which considering I am not a runner at all is pretty impressive.

And so now I am on to my next challenge. lol
The details haven't been released yet but as far as I know it starts on Monday, so hopefully they are out soon!

Just Keep Running!!

And so it continues today. We are off to Regina for yet another lacrosse game. As the week winds down the season comes closer and closer to ending. I am looking forward to the season being over but at the same time I'm wishing it wasn't quite done yet.
 
 
Lacrosse ending means 2 things for me. One, the school year is also over and I have to figure what to do with my kids for the next 2 months. Two, my schedule can calm down. Now in previous years this would mean no more running around due to chaotic schedules, however this year it means that derby can once again take over my schedule entirely. And with our game coming up in a few short weeks that is exactly what it's going to do.
 
 
 

Now on that note, I have tickets available for the game, make sure you send me and email if you need some. They are going to sell out fast!

More Chaos!

Well what a busy weekend!!
 
Spent 2 nights and 3 days in Saskatoon for lacrosse provincials for my son. They came away in second place over all!
 
During this week the chaos does not stop, we have a play off games for lacrosse every night this week, a guest coach at derby tonight, team practice and written test for the newly benchmarked Wed. night as well as planning meetings and all kinds of other stuff.
 
July 9th is not very far away and all the details are slowly falling into place. Tickets are now available and refs have been secured. Now just some fine tuning and hopefully we will have a good show to put on for the city of Moose Jaw.



Next weekend I get to do it all over again in Regina for my daughter's provincial tournament.

More Chaos!

Well it's time for another busy weekend to get underway.
 
My son has his lacrosse provincial tournament this weekend in Saskatoon. So today I get to leave work early just so we can be there in time for the first game. We will be there the entire weekend depending on whether they win or lose their games.
 
 
 
So sticking to healthy eating will be a challenge with being away from home, but I have snacks packed and ready to take with us so that we at least have healthy options there. The challenge will be finding restaurants that have healthy affordable choices for other meals. I don't know Saskatoon very well so this is why this is going to be a challenge for me. Sooo if anyone knows of good places to eat that won't break the bank in toon town please let me know :)

Benchmark Day Continued again!

Today is the day...the freshies get to find out who passed and who didn't quite get there.


All I can say is I am so proud of each and every one of them. I hope that no one is overly stressed about how they did or getting the results. I unfortunately cannot be there when the results are given as my daughter has her first playoff game for lacrosse tonight. I will however be going to practice after so that I can skate with everyone.



To everyone that did not make it I still want you to know how far you have come in such a short amount of time and that I have faith that you will make it next time. And to everyone that did make it Congrats and I can't wait to play with you :)

Well all I can say is wow. Our freshies did really well last night. I can't wait to sit down with the panel and make the final decisions on who made it :) 
I love watching the progression in the the skills from being bambi's on ice to fierce jammers and amazing blockers. I can't wait to play with these lovely ladies  :D

Benchmark Day!

Well it has finally arrived. Benchmark day in Moose Jaw! All I can say is wow, these ladies have come so far in such a short period of time. 6 weeks is not a long time to learn all the skills needed to play derby but these ladies have done so well with learning so much so quickly. I can't wait till tonight when you get to showcase your skills for us :)

Busy busy!

It's been a busy weekend so far. Had a good time skating out at the skate park,walked all over Moose Jaw during our challenge class yesterday morning, went to the driving range and went golfing today.

A Bad Week!!

What a crazy bad week this has been. Everything that could go wrong at work did, issues with my kids, not enough sleep and well just all around bad week.
 

So yes I was having a rough time and acted totally out of character towards some people that didn't deserve it. I am hoping that more or less my world has returned to what is normal for me. Though I have realized that it could always be worse. 

 

Things are finally starting to get better. My stress level has dropped alot. And to help it get lower I decided to order myself a fabulous pair of new shoes. Now hopefully the mail strike doesn't keep them from getting here for too long.

First, I didn't actually get supper :( Second, after practice we went out for drinks so I had 2 gin with cranberry juice and some nachos(that was my supper)
